In an attempt to break their losing streak, the Las Positas College Lady Hawks came up short against City College of San Francisco Rams in an 80-63 loss at the Nest on Feb. 3. Hawks' guard April Duarte led LPC in scoring with 23 points.
LPC's last win was against San Diego Mesa College on Dec. 12, 2009. They have lost 12 games in a row. The Lady Hawks' next chance to end the streak is on Feb. 5 at 5:30 pm at Mission College.
The Hawks matched the Rams shot for shot and kept the game close for the most part. It wasn't until the last few minutes of the first half when the Rams broke away. CCSF gained a quick lead with easy baskets and consecutive free throws to end the half with the score 33-25.
Duarte tried to revive the Hawks back to life after halftime by scoring 13 points. But the Rams finished the game by outscoring LPC 47-38 in the second half.
"It was a battle the whole game," forward Marreesha Lynch said. "My team kept up the effort and they didn't give up."
With only eight players on the team, fouls hurt the Hawks as starters Lynch and forward Cierra Gilbert both fouled out midway through the second half. Along with Lynch and Gilbert, starting forward Stephanie Klinko played with four fouls for much of the second half, making her more visibly cautious on defense. If Klinko caught one more foul, she would have been disqualified, leaving the Hawks with only five available players and no substitutions for the rest of the game.
"Considering that we only have 8 players on our team, I'm pretty pleased with the outcome," head coach Thomas Fletcher said. "We played with a lot of hustle and intensity against one of the 'top teams' in our league right now. On top of that, everyone on the team scored tonight."
