The Las Positas College Veteran's Club hosted its first ever Spaghetti Feed fund-raiser dinner on Saturday, May 10 in the Student Center, featuring food and drink, a silent auction, a number of door prizes and distinguished guests from both the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District and the local community. The evening, designed as a fundraiser to promote awareness of the veteran's program at LPC, raised approximately $4,000 for various veteran scholarship and loan programs.
The event began at 5:30 p.m., when guests began arriving at the door of the Student Center. Most of the nearly 100 tickets sold were distributed in advance of the night, with some guests purchasing their tickets at the door.
As more guests arrived at the dinner, observers could spot such distinguished guests as LPC President DeRionne Pollard, Vice President of Administrative Services Bob Kratochvil. CLPCCD board of trustees members Carlo Veccharelli and Isabel Dvorsky, CLPCCD Chancellor Joel Kinnamon, Vice President of Student Services Pam Luster and Dean of Admissions Sylvia Rodriguez. Club members also welcomed family and friends-those who could not attend the dinner showed support by offering donations in lieu of purchasing a ticket, which cost $20 for guests and $10 for all veterans.
Older veterans of wars past were in attendance, and hearing "Welcome home" from one Vietnam veteran to another was commonplace. Former Navy Captain Tom McCaffrey, Grand Knight of the local Livermore Knights of Columbus Council.
Bruno's Italian Cuisine of Pleasanton provided the food for the festivities, which included spaghetti with marinara and meat sauce, bread and salad. Blue Star Moms, a service support group in the East Bay, provided dessert, classic red-and-white checkered tablecloths and floral arrangements to support the Italian-themed dinner.
Vice President Kratochvil emceed the event. "We are here tonight to honor our veterans on campus and in our community," announced Kratochvil to the capacity crowd. "The personal stories we hear are more important than the money garnered here at these events."
